History of Rosewell

Located in Midlothian, Scotland, Rosewell has a rich heritage rooted in the coal mining industry. Established in the mid-19th century, the village flourished around the Whitehill Colliery, with mining engineer Archibald Hood playing a pivotal role in its expansion from 1856 and the introduction of a new shaft in 1878. This period saw the population surge from approximately 400 in 1861 to over 2,000 within two decades. To accommodate this growth, the community developed essential amenities, including housing, shops, churches, schools and a co-operative retail society. However, the decline of the mining industry led to the closure of Whitehill Colliery in 1961, resulting in the gradual loss of local infrastructure and community vibrancy.

About Rosewell Development Trust

In response to these challenges, Rosewell Development Trust (RDT) was founded in 2011 as a community-led initiative to revitalise the village. Dedicated to restoring local amenities and fostering new opportunities, RDT has spearheaded several key projects. A notable achievement is the development of The Steading, a modern community hub that opened in 2020, providing spaces for social, educational and recreational activities.

RDT plays a central role in fostering social connections and well-being through a wide range of community groups and activities held at The Steading – providing opportunities for companionship, skill-sharing, and staying active. These initiatives help combat isolation, promote lifelong learning, and strengthen community bonds across all ages.

Financially, RDT has secured significant funding to support its initiatives. The Trust received £5,800 from the National Lottery to create a sensory and vegetable garden, enhancing outdoor community spaces. Additionally, RDT has been awarded over £1 million in grant funding across multiple projects, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development and long-term investment in the village.

Through these efforts, RDT continues to honour Rosewell’s past while building a stronger, more connected, and resilient community for the future.
