Help write Rosewell’s next chapter
What makes someone memorable? Often, it is not the biggest milestones in their life. It is the stories they told, the hobby they loved, the group they never missed or the way they made other people feel welcome.
These are the details that become part of the stories we tell about the people who have shaped our lives.
Remember A Charity Week runs from 7 to 13 September 2026. This year’s campaign celebrates the funny moments, interesting hobbies and individual quirks we remember about people. It also invites us to consider how we would like our own story to continue through the causes and communities that matter to us.
The stories that shape Rosewell
A village has its own story, written over generations by the people who live there.
At The Steading, we see these stories continue every day. It can be seen in those who share a skill, volunteer their time, keep a group going, welcome a newcomer or in those who just turn up regularly and form part of the community.
These individual contributions create friendships, confidence and connection. Together, they help shape the kind of place Rosewell becomes.
Not every legacy is financial. However, after looking after family and friends, some people may choose to leave a gift in their Will as another way of carrying their connection with Rosewell forward.
The charity behind The Steading
Many people know The Steading as a place for activities, events, volunteering, play, learning and social connection. They may not realise that it is operated by Rosewell Development Trust, a registered Scottish charity. Rosewell’s earlier story was closely connected with Whitehill Colliery. Its closure in 1961 marked the end of one chapter and was followed by the gradual loss of many local amenities and opportunities.
Rosewell Development Trust (RDT) began in 2010 as a community-led response to those changes. The opening of The Steading in 2020 began another chapter, giving the village a shared place where people of all ages could meet, take part and feel connected.
As a charity, RDT exists to benefit Rosewell and its residents. Our work focuses on protecting community spaces, creating opportunities and responding to the changing needs of the village.

Introducing Gifts in Wills at RDT
Remember A Charity Week is a fitting time for us to launch our new Gifts in Wills campaign.
The campaign brings together a dedicated webpage and new printed resources, created to provide clear, straightforward guidance for anyone who may be considering remembering Rosewell Development Trust in their Will.
Here, we explain the different types of gift that can be left, provide the registered details a solicitor or Will writer will need, and answer common questions about legacy giving.
There is no expectation or obligation. Providing for family and friends comes first, and leaving a charitable gift is always a personal decision.
What could Rosewell’s next chapter hold?
Rosewell’s future has not yet been written. Its needs will change, new opportunities will emerge and future generations will shape the village in ways we cannot predict today.
A gift of any size will support RDT’s charitable work. It can help protect The Steading, keep community activities affordable, strengthen connection and wellbeing, and create new opportunities as Rosewell continues to grow and change.
