New Garden Bed Planted at The Steading
Our fantastic gardening volunteers have transformed a previously bare bank beside the Trim Trail into a new planted garden bed.
The team spent the day planting a varied mix of young trees, shrubs and flowering plants across the slope. The new bed already makes a visible difference to the grounds and will become fuller and more colourful as the plants establish.
Made possible
through local support
The project was made possible with funding from the Midlothian Climate Action Network and Hub, which supports community groups across Midlothian to take practical action for the climate and nature. Its work includes supporting biodiversity projects and connecting community gardens across the county.
We are also very grateful to Iain Craig & Sons, who collected the plants for us and helped make the planting possible.
Creating more space for nature
As the garden bed develops, the mix of trees, shrubs and flowering plants will add colour and variety to the grounds while creating additional habitat for wildlife.
Flowers can offer pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies and other insects, while trees and shrubs can provide food, shelter and nesting opportunities as they mature.
The new planting will also support pollinators, including the bees from our own hives in The Haven.
Thank you to our volunteers

This was a substantial area to prepare and plant, and we would like to thank every volunteer who contributed their time, energy and gardening skills.
Our gardening volunteers help care for outdoor spaces at The Steading and around Rosewell throughout the year.
