Celebrating Volunteers’ Week at The Steading
This week is Volunteers’ Week across the UK, a chance to recognise the people who give their time, energy and care to support local organisations, charities and community spaces.
At The Steading, volunteers are an essential part of what makes the building work as a welcoming, community-focused place for Rosewell and the surrounding area.
From greeting visitors and supporting groups to preparing rooms, helping with activities, serving refreshments, tending the gardens and offering a friendly face, our volunteers play a vital role in the everyday life of The Steading.
Volunteers at the heart of The Steading
Much of the work volunteers do happens quietly in the background. It is the setting up before a session begins, the clearing away afterwards, the practical support during activities, and the small acts of care that help people feel welcome and included.
It is also the work that happens outside: looking after the gardens, growing vegetables, maintaining outdoor spaces, and helping organise seasonal activities such as the plant sale.
Over the last couple of months, we have also been delighted to welcome pupil volunteers from Rosewell Primary School. The P7s have been coming along on Thursday mornings to help out in the gardens, bringing extra energy, enthusiasm and care to the outdoor spaces around The Steading.
That work is not always visible, but it makes a real difference.
Every month, volunteers give a significant amount of time to support activities, groups, services and outdoor spaces at The Steading. Their contribution helps keep the building and gardens running smoothly, and makes it possible for people of different ages and backgrounds to take part, connect with others and feel part of local life.
A week of thanks
To mark Volunteers’ Week, we are taking time to say thank you properly.
This week includes a thank you coffee morning for our volunteers, with refreshments supplied by The Village Cafe. It is an important opportunity for us to bring people together and recognise the time, care and commitment they have given throughout the year.
We are also pleased that several volunteers connected with The Steading have been nominated for the Midlothian Volunteer Awards, which take place later this week. We will share a separate update next week following the awards.
Why volunteering matters
Volunteering is about more than filling gaps or helping with tasks. In a community setting, volunteers help create the atmosphere and relationships that make a place feel genuinely welcoming.
They bring local knowledge, kindness, patience, practical skills and consistency. They help people feel noticed. They make activities easier to run. They support staff, groups, visitors and attendees in ways that are deeply valuable.
At The Steading, that contribution helps turn a building into a community space.
Thank you to our volunteers
This Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a clear thank you to every volunteer who gives their time to The Steading, including our young helpers from Rosewell Primary.
Your support helps make The Steading a warmer, more welcoming and more connected place for the people who use it.
We will be sharing more throughout the week on our social media channels, and will post a further update next week following the Midlothian Volunteer Awards.
